VervePress -- Dog Days 2010

Ah, those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer -- also known as "the Dog Days"! Even the holidays are on holiday this time of year. Nothing official/ecard worthy's on the horizon for another month until the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, September 8th. (Stay tuned for our Rosh Rollout throughout August!)

Since we're smack dab in the middle of them, we'll share some insight into that curious moniker "the Dog Days of Summer"-- roughly July and August in the northern hemisphere, and January/February in the southern. (No, it's not about lolling around like a dog because it's so damn hot out, as we thought).

The expression stems from the star, Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog) -- and the second brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun. Ancient Romans believed that Sirius' brightness contributed to the extreme heat during the time of the year when it rose in tandem with the Sun.
